Eva Demaya Centre
The Eva Demaya Centre (EDC) is a rural health and development centre based in Luviri, Rumphi District, in Northern Malawi. Founded in 2001, the Centre has been dedicated for more than two decades to improving lives through accessible healthcare, quality education, social support, environmental initiatives, and cultural exchange.
EDC works under the umbrella of the Khula Foundation, a Swiss-registered foundation that provides governance, accountability, and ongoing support. This partnership ensures that the Centre remains rooted in the local community while meeting international standards of transparency and trust.
While Khula Foundation provides ongoing support, the Centre depends on donations and partnerships to sustain and expand its services. Every contribution helps us continue offering essential care and development programmes to the people who need them most.

Our History
Our Name
The name Eva Demaya symbolizes unity and connection:
- Eva represents Europe
- Demaya represents Africa
Together, they embody our vision of partnership, shared purpose, and cultural respect.
How it all began
The Centre was established in 2001 by Jacqueline Kouwenhoven, a Dutch nurse and her Scottish Irish husband, John Fox, both with extensive experience in Africa. Under their leadership, EDC became a respected and trusted community institution. Jacqueline led the Centre until her retirement in 2023, leaving behind a strong legacy of service and compassion.
Until the end of 2023, EDC was funded by the Eva Demaya Stichting in the Netherlands, with significant support from the Van Kesteren Foundation in Switzerland.
Where we are today
In September 2024, the Khula Foundation, led by Dr Nicoliene Potgieter Steiner and Dr Manuel Steiner—longstanding supporters of the Centre—took over the management and funding of EDC. Their commitment ensures that EDC will continue its vital work in line with the vision originally laid out by Jacqueline.
